OPTIONS Conversation Planning Tool

This tool allows you to plan and practice a coaching conversation by choosing the questions you want to ask for the OPTIONS step of the GROW process. To select the question for the conversation, select "Include."

Option Questions

Step 3B of the GROW Coaching System generates ideas for OPTIONS (actions) on the part of the employee that, if taken, could contribute to the solution of the problem. OPTIONS are steps that overcome the OBSTACLES and achieve the GOAL.


Focus of OPTIONS Questions:
• What activities, behavioral changes, education or skills can the employee acquire to achieve the GOAL?
• Prioritize based upon difficulty and probability of success
• Create rules and negative consequences of a given action
• Identify potential distractions and de-railers


To select the question for the conversation, select "Yes"; to exclude the question click "No."

OPTION 1 - Where can you go to get advice or technical assistance?
OPTION 2 - Which actions have the highest Probability of Success (POS)?
OPTION 3 - If things don’t go well, when will you get me involved?
OPTION 4 - What are the pros and cons of this option?
OPTION 5 - Imagine you already reached your goal. How did you do it?
OPTION 6 - What possibilities for action can you see? (Don’t worry about whether they are realistic at this stage.)
OPTION 7 - What approach/actions have you used or observed with others in similar circumstances?
OPTION 8 - What else could you do?
OPTION 9 - What if the OBSTACLES didn’t exist, what would you do now?
